Where are you from or where do you live around here?

Bridgewater - I've lived here most of my life

Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm a Customer Service Manager at BFG Supply Co and have been there for about 9 years. I'm married to Dustin, who supports me in everything I do. I have the best family and friends who I see and hang out with every chance I get. I'm a social butterfly by nature so I enjoy festivals, social events, parties, anywhere there's people! Summer time is my favorite and if it weren't for my husband, I would definitely live somewhere warmer.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

I started at The Rock with Hope back in 2018. We had been working out together for a couple of years and wanted to start trying CrossFit. We were able to join a gym that offered that style workout but quickly realized we wanted to join a CrossFit gym. The Rock was the only one we tried and we knew instantly that it was the right place for us.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

Last year's open was a huge eye opener. I realized that I could do hard things, I just needed to push myself a little more each day. After class I try to work on different movements and improve on my weaknesses.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

A huge goal of mine is currently pull ups. I've never been able to do one and can't wait until I get my first. I do CrossFit to keep an active and healthy lifestyle. I feel so much better, both physically and mentally, after a morning at the gym. It has made such a difference in my life and each year I feel stronger and more capable.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

The Rock is definitely special because of the people. Everyone is so encouraging and motivating. I love walking in and people greeting you and then when you leave someone always says bye and to have a great day. The positive energy that the Rock has always starts my day off right. Also, I get to workout with my bestie in the mornings, and that is a huge plus.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

Favorite movements are any type of cleans and rowing. Least favorite are thrusters and wall balls. I love picking heavy weight off the floor and feeling strong. Rowing is something that comes naturally so I'm glad when I see that in a workout. Thrusters and wall balls just tend to wind me more than other movements.

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

Looking back at my fitness journey over the last 10 years, I wouldn't be where I am today without The Rock. I love waking up and challenging myself with more weights or a new movement, and feeling the encouragement from everyone around me. I feel like we are all watching each other become the best versions of ourselves and I'm here for it!

Rachel is a staple at 6:30am alongside her “duo” sidekick, Hope. Rachel has a very strict pre workout ritual…she gets there early and sits down on the floor in her spot to claim it while she waits for the coaches instructions. Rachel is always smiling and bringing her contagious laugh with her to class. She’s a ray of sunshine in those pre dawn hours.

Over the last few months, Rachel has stepped up her nutrition game, which in turn has her crushing her workouts even more. She has pushed herself to go heavier and faster and embrace being uncomfortable. She is always working after class on her weaknesses and striving for improvement in different areas. Just the other week she reached a huge milestone most strive for: her first unassisted pull-up.

Thankfully no matter how many times Nate roasts her or flexes on her in class, she continues to come back. Rachel, keep doing what you’re doing lady. We see you.

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

I was raised in Mt. Solon and now live in Mt. Crawford.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I work at Green Valley Auctions with my husband Sam and we have 2 doggies, Ellie Mae and Dulcie. We have been married for 2.5 years. We enjoy hiking, going to auctions, thrifting, and finding the best local places to eat. If you need a good Taco Truck recommendation, we have a few ;)

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

One morning I was headed home from a typical workout at Planet Fitness when I was scrolling Facebook and saw an add for a 6 week program at Rocktown. I had in previous conversations told my husband (who was doing CrossFit at the time) that I wouldn't be caught dead doing CrossFit. For some odd reason, I went home that day and told him that I was thinking about checking into it and he highly encouraged me to do so. I reached out via the Facebook Ad and the rest is history. What was just a 6 week and I’m out thing has turned into a “Hey Lauren, make sure you renew my membership please.”

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

Oh, there's been so many moments. I remember this one workout on a Saturday that I RX'd the cleans and I remember leaving and being like, holy cow I just moved a really heavy barbell for a really long time.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

My main goal is going to be to continue to show up to the Rock even when the days are long and tough and I don't feel like it. 2021 really showed me that showing up even when I wasn't all there still proved to give me progress and I ended 2021 with finally hitting a Squat Clean goal of 125lbs. It took me a whole year to get there and at times I thought I didn't have it in me but showing up and just getting the work done regardless of feelings 100% brought me to that accomplishment. (Also a lot of PT with Joel and help from every single coach along the way!) I also am going to bump that former goal and work to hit a 135lb squat clean this year. I do CrossFit because honestly, it has been the one form of movement that has proven its benefits to me. Mentally and physically I am not the same since joining the Rock and I never want to stop chasing that change.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

The community of the Rock is intoxicating. I didn't just join a gym, I joined a family, a group of people who all show up to the same place with different backgrounds, different views and different goals but we all show up for one thing - to workout together. I would never give that up for all the money in the world. These people notice when I am not there, they know my goals and they push me to accomplish them.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

I love Squat Cleans and Power Cleans mainly because I spent a year with Joel drilling them. I am hesitant to write my least favorite because I know what this means but I guess I will be honest and say wall balls. They just really aren't that fun and they hurt.

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

I can’t thank Rocktown CrossFit enough for the space they’ve created for their athletes. I’m not sure that I would have had the same CrossFit experience if I had joined another box. My only regret is that I didn’t start my CrossFit journey sooner. The Rock is home and I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it. If you’ve been thinking about something, I encourage you to take the leap of faith and do whatever it is that scares the heck out of you.

Sierra walked into our doors right before we were shut down for quarantine in 2020. Without even knowing us, she trusted us with her fitness every morning on Zoom from her home gym. She was consistent through quarantine, and as as soon as we were open in June, she became a consistent staple at the 5:30am class. During those 11 weeks, it would have been easy to quit or nix a routine she had just started-but she didn’t. She hasn’t looked back since.

Sierra is known to make an evening appearance once a week to get in the extra reps in personal training with Joel. She’s always striving to better herself, and while she may be quiet, we see her. Sierra, thanks for trusting us 2 years ago, and being a staple of the team ever since!

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

I am from Timberville, Va. I grew up on a farm and then ended up buying my grandmas house, where we live at now that is part of the farm as well.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m the proud wife of the newest Rocktown member Chuck Deviers. I’m a mommy to Rylee (5) and Abigail (2), two very sassy girls. I’m a nurse practitioner, I work full time at Med express here in Harrisonburg. I completed grad school while being a member at Rocktown with Tracy Seefried. My family and I love spending time outdoors, on our farm and camping.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

Like many others here, Jasmine Smith convinced me to go to bring a friend day. I was dropping Rylee off at child watch and Jasmine pretty much forced me in her car! Kim Ohgren had been my work out partner at Gold’s doing body pump (we were so cool), but she had tossed around the idea of joining. When I went to the work out with Jasmine it had dead lifts which is my love and burpees- which I hate but I felt so strong and loved the challenge and the entire gym cheering for each other!

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

The Open workout with Wall Walks and Double Unders. I actually strung some Double Unders together and it was such a great feeling! Lauren was my judge and I remember her screaming at me! Doing the open for the first time was such a high!

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

To get strong AF. I love trying to constantly better myself, push myself further. Completing 75 hard really made me wake up and realize how much further out of my comfort zones I can push. I want to be a strong role model for my daughters. Thanks to the ladies here we did the 50 miles in December and it truly has made me enjoy running SO much more!

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

Rocktown is truly a family. We all experience milestones, life events here. I worked out the day before I was induced with Abigail, I consistently showed up through grad school, the Rock had supported me through a miscarriage, a career change, all kinds of stuff! To show up and have someone in your corner day in and day out, from the coaches to the people sweating beside you is a feeling like no other.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout?

Heavy cleans, power or squat, heavvyyy deadlifts and now I’m fond of running! I never in my life thought I would say that!

What are your least favorite? Why?

Hmmm… synchro burpees I love long partner workouts but hate if it’s synchronized, no break!

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

I truly am thankful for the Rocktown family of constantly supporting me. Nate and Lauren have truly built an awesome establishment and fun place to work out. All the coaches are so friendly and supportive. If I go in grumpy I come out happy which is a great thing

I remember seeing Jenny at Valley Fitness doing things in the group fitness room (with Kim) and thinking "MAN! She would love it at Rocktown!"

A few months later, I got the message that they were ready to give it a try. She's been a consistent fixture at the Rock since and I'm so thankful she made that inquiry to us.

Over the past 4 years, Jenny has had A LOT going on: finishing her nurse practitioner program, working full-time, being a mom. But no matter what she had going on, she has always made her workouts a priority....even if it means working out in her garage with Chuck at 9pm. Her routine over the past few years has been a complete slap in the face to the excuse "I don't have enough time." Because we all have time, it's just how we choose to use it. Thank you for setting the example Jenny.

In class, Jenny is always known for yelling "GOOD JOB!" or "NICE WORK!" across the room to her fellow athletes mid workout. She is everyone's biggest hype man both in AND out of the gym. Jenny, keep shining!

Where are you from or where do you live around here?
From Illinois originally, moved to McGaheysville in 2014. I lived a lot places before that: Ohio, California, Montana, North Carolina, Wyoming, Georgia, and Mississippi.

Tell us a little about yourself.
Married (14 years), father of two (Sophia - 11 and Jack - 8).  I've worked for the National Park Service since 2007, currently at Shenandoah National Park.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?
I had heard about CrossFit from a coworker back in 2007.  He showed me the main page where workouts were listed.  The idea was pretty intimidating since I was unfamiliar with what most of the movements.  I had never really lifted weights except for a small amount of time while in college but that was just using some machines.  As time went by, I, along with other coworkers became more familiar with the programs and movements.  I eventually joined a box in Saltillo, MS.  From there I really enjoyed the classes and not having to think about what I was going to do at the gym.  My family and I moved from MS to VA in 2014 I kind of shelved CrossFit for a few years.  There happened to be a silent auction at my kids school and one of the items being auctioned was a month membership at the Rock (my wife won the auction and gave me the free month).  I showed up for the start of my month, got paired up on a partner workout, got smoked, but kept coming back and I think that was more than 2 years ago.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?
I
'm not sure if I've had a "moment.” I remember my first workout at the Rock and getting destroyed and thinking that maybe I was making a mistake and that maybe I didn't belong. However, all the support from my partner, coach and other athletes made those doubts disappear and I realized that it didn't matter if the workout didn't go as planned, as long as you put forth the effort and didn't quit or listen to the voices in your head telling you to stop. I had moments like this many times during difficult workouts or on days when the movements (especially Double Unders) weren't going well, but I try to pause, relax, and remember that it's just a workout and getting frustrated or mad (or swearing a bunch) isn't going to make the workout any easier so just calm down and do my best.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?
Finally smooth out my Double Unders and get that Bar Muscle Up.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?
Everything from the other members, the coaches and the programming. I was never sure what I wanted from a gym until I started going to CrossFit back in MS. When I moved here I knew it was something that I wanted to get back to and when I started coming to the Rock on a regular basis, I knew that the environment here is what I had been looking for.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?
Favorites are probably running (the thing that I don't really have to try so hard) and Pull Ups. I absolutely hate Thrusters. They are the one move that no matter how "good" I think I'm doing, they always steal my lungs and zap my energy. I'll do them, but I don't like them.

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.
I would like to thank Lauren and Nate for building this gym and community, the other coaches who make the classes one of the best parts of my day, and all the athletes who come to the Rock and put forth the effort.  This is a really great place to experience and I look forward to each day that I get to keep coming in.

If you have been on an 800m run and heard the patter of feet quietly approaching behind you, you’ve probably worked out with Jon.

Jon is knowing for making appearances at any and all classes to get in his workout. He’s usually the quiet one in the back close to the rig. You might not hear much out of him, but he’s consistently there each week.

While he’s known for being quiet, he always has a joke or comment that brings a smile to his coaches.

Jon never shortcuts himself on the technique work and is always putting in the extra time and reps to work on weaknesses. Jon, we see you putting in the work. Keep grinding!

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

When people ask me this, I always like to answer, “how much time do you have?” I’ve been a lot of places and seen a lot of things. Whether it be through my own travels, or because of the Navy (Go Navy!), or the various jobs I’ve had throughout my lifetime. I was born in Hawaii, but have lived in: New Mexico, Germany (High School exchange program), … needless to say, its 7 states and 4 countries. But I live about a mile south of Eastern Mennonite University, off of Chicago Avenue. You’ll usually see me running around there on the weekends.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a man of many places, as stated above. But wherever I go, I do what I can to make the most of where I’m at. I consider Harrisonburg, VA, as my home. I’ve felt welcomed by this community and want to give back wherever I can. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering. I’m also a former Naval Officer, and proud of the time that I was able to serve. I was in the Civil Engineering Corps, and I like to joke with people – “I was such a good Sailor, I was never sent to a ship.”

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

I was looking for a new challenge. Every year, I like to set a new goal. Last year, 2019, I wanted to run a 50K. So, I started training for one, and in Jan 2020, I did it. So I was looking for a new goal. I had lost my job around March 2020 and started “working” in Harrisonburg as a Project Manager. I put it that way, as I was remote, as was everyone else. Starting a new job, on a project I’ve never seen, with people I’ve never met. Needless to say, it was a rough transition. Once I was able to come up here, I started looking around. I think it was one night, going down the YouTube rabbit trail (I know, dangerous), that I came across the CrossFit Games 2016 Murph. So, I told myself – “why not.” Around July 2020, I saw that Rocktown was one of the two main CrossFit gyms in town. I read through a lot of the ‘Athlete Spotlight’ write ups, and it looked like a good place to be. I didn’t even try to look anywhere else. I did a drop-in class and was welcomed by the coach. I can’t remember who it was, as the whole experience at the time was overwhelming, and frankly, I was a bit intimidated. I thought to myself “why would a bunch of CrossFit members, accept some runner dude?”. They did. I distinctly remember a “Welcome. You’ll like it here. We’re a family.” I was hooked. I was all in.

When or what was your “CrossFit Moment” - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

I think it was during one of the weighted vest workouts. For some reason, those are my jam. If it’s “vestable”, I’ll make sure I do what I can do be there. It was:

3 Rounds
800m Run
30 Push Ups
50 Air Squats

My “rabbit” was Jack. I don’t think he knew I was chasing him, but I know how strong and good he is. So, I set the bar, to what I thought was too high, and went for it. I was first, and I don’t think I was ever prouder of a workout – not before, or since. It was excellent prep for the Murph, set a few months later. I think the moment that really solidified it for me was the Murph. The bringing together of so many, for one purpose. The pain didn’t matter; it was all for a bigger cause, and larger movement.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

String together some Double Unders… ha ha ha! I am not exactly the most coordinated person out there, and I have “two left feet”. I think that’s what I really like about this sport – you don’t have to be some talented sportsman to be a solid athlete. This really is for anyone that’s willing to put in the work. What keeps me coming back? I’d say the camaraderie as well as the community. It’s great to grind with people, and really work out stress, get stronger, get faster…whatever your goals are. We’re all in it together.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

We’re a family, we really are. We come from all different places – some local, some not. We all have different beliefs, different personalities, different perspectives. The one thing that unites us, is the willingness to grind, and get the work in. Whether it be the motivated 5:30AM crew or the “work hate and discontent” crew of 5:30PM (my people) – the end feeling is the same: accomplishment. As stated above, I was coming in from a more running centered background. Sure, I did some strength stuff, but that was more focused on leg stability and core strength. I was in a very dark place not all that long ago. I thought that I could literally run away from my problems. I enjoy running, don’t get me wrong, and still do quite a bit of it. I thought at the time – “if I ran more, faster, harder, things will be ok”. Sure, I got a bunch of Personal Bests doing that, but I was still a broken man. COVID ripped the mask off of anything I may have proverbially paper over. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror, I needed a change. I needed to get out of my comfort zone. Enter into Rocktown CrossFit. Something about being integral to the success of a community of like-minded people, makes a lot of things a lot more manageable. This then allows you to transform your current state, into something a lot more positive and productive. This place literally changed me. I realized that I could face major obstacles, and blow through them. Doesn’t mean it’s always easy, but together, it’s doable.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

Favorite – vestable. Any workout that I can wear a vest, … I don’t know what it is, I guess with my Military background, it’s like a switch is activated and its go time. But as far as a movement, Power Clean. Something about standing up with that weight shoulder height and staring straight forward. It’s just awesomesause. And of course, running, as that’s usually my “catch up” part of the workout.

Least Favorite – Muscle Ups. And that’s because I can’t do them, ha ha ha! But movement I can actually execute, sorta: Snatch. Doesn’t matter if its Power Snatch or Squat Snatch – it sucks. A whole bucket of suck.

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

If you’re ever in a class with me, you’ll know it. Something about that timer going off, hits a switch in my brain, and its go time. “C’mon 5:30!” is what you’ll hear me cry. I have a ton of energy, and I’m more than happy to spread it around. I’ve been called many things – Energizer Bunny, Hypeman, and #1 Assistant Coach, to name just a few. I am purpose driven, and want to create a culture of joy wherever I go. I feel that we all have a place at the table, and a purpose to keep moving forward.

And to revisit my 100 Class Patch write-up: “This place will change you, if you let it”

Those are the words that greet you when you walk in. No truer words can be spoken about this place. For me, one of the accomplishments I am most proud of is signing up. Seriously. Taking that leap of faith, and getting out of my comfort zone. Coming from a running focused background (from 5K to 50K), this was different for

me. “I want to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.” All I have to say about that, is be careful what you wish for. One of the main things that keep me coming back is my designated partner. Find you someone that pushes you, and stick to them like glue. If there is anything that I could tell a new member is – get ready to be transformed. Don’t give up. Don’t quit. You’ll be glad you stuck with it.

f you’ve been to the 5:30pm class then you have no doubt met the one and only Jonathan Fischer. You’ll know it's him when you hear his infamous words, “LETS GO 5:30!!!” or “GET SOME!!!” He’s often caught weight vesting workouts for fun, and rewriting the workout on the floor with his baby shark chalk. Jonathan is sure to make his presence at the rock known by leading the pack on the mile run, booty shaking during the workout, or assuming the assistant coach role in the clock countdown. We are so grateful to have Jonathan....he brings an upbeat energy that keeps the 5:30pm on their toes and is always encouraging others. His giving heart is always on full display in assisting members with their chemistry homework or simply painting meter marks on the asphalt. These qualities are ones you simply cannot teach. Outside the gym he continues to set the bar high for himself. Trails runs to spartan races to meal prep...Jonathan is always looking to perfect his craft. If you are looking for someone to push you to be better, look no further… and stick to him like glue.

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

Moved to Rockingham County from Northern Virginia about 33 years ago.

Tell us a little about yourself:

My husband David and I have been married 31 years and have two children Seth and Faith. We raise cattle on our farm outside of Elkton. I am a Culinary Arts Teaching Assistant at MTC. In my "spare time" I go to Rocktown, cook and bake, and help on the farm.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

Kristen Roach (Scrub) is a big reason why I started Rocktown. We worked together and she encouraged me to come. I told her that I was too old and that there was no way I would be able to keep up and would probably die during a workout. She was very adamant and kept stressing how no matter age or fitness level there was a place for me at Rocktown. When I walked into my first class I realized I knew a couple of people. One of those people was Lisa Hensley and we have been gym partners ever since. I am so thankful that Scrub kept talking and encouraging me which she still continues to do.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

My most memorable CrossFit moment is when I reached the top of the hill for the second time. The first time I thought maybe I just got lucky, but the second time I reached it felt amazing.

What are your goals for CrossFit?

My goals are to improve weight lifting by learning and practicing correct moves in the Barbell Bettys Class. Coach Joel helped us so much in the first class and I am really looking forward to taking the second class. CrossFit has helped me feel stronger, improve my health, and has given me the confidence to try other things.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

Rocktown CrossFit is special to me because everyone from Nate and Lauren to all of the Coaches to all of the members care about each other both inside and outside of the gym. They cheer you on to finish a workout, encourage you on a run as they pass, text you to check in, celebrate your accomplishments and are there for you when you fall short.

What are your favorite/least favorite movements to do in a workout?

My favorite movements are the Farmers Carry, Deadlifts, Planks, and jump rope. Burpees are my least favorite. Why??? Cause they are burpees.

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

Scrub got me through the door, Lauren and Joel worked with me through Peak (sorry for all of the tears and whining) and helped me realize that CrossFit was possible, and having the best gym partner to continually push, and support me daily has all added to my love of CrossFit and more importantly my love of Rocktown CrossFit.

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

I live in Elkton with my husband Ken and our 4 fur kids, Pete, Gigi, Abby and Penni,  all rescues from local shelters.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I have been a Realtor since 1996 with Funkhouser Real Estate Group and when Im not showing property I keep the books for my son-in-laws company.   In my free time I love to quilt and you will usually find me in on the weekends in my downstairs quilting studio making beautiful quilts.  I believe strongly in giving back to my community so I volunteer when needed but my passion is helping homeless animals.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

I joined Rocktown in 2019 after noticing that most of my friends my age were starting to have age related health issues. I didn’t want that for myself or my family so I decided to do something about it.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

I have CrossFit moments almost every time I come in the door. I am always super proud every time I can finish a workout, increase a weight, Sign up for tomorrow without looking at what the next workout will be.

What are your goals for CrossFit?

I set small goals for myself in CrossFit. The first was of course the dreaded hill. I made it to the top without stopping a few months ago. Im still not a fan of the hill so if anyone would like to eliminate it from future workouts I would be okay with it. I love it when I can increase my weights, run a mile without stopping, My goals is to always try and do better than I did yesterday.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

I love the Rocktown Gym, I love the people, I love the welcoming atmosphere. I come for the exercise, I stay because of the wonderful group of people that I get to share my goals and victories with every week. And a special shout out to my partner Tammy - who always encourages me to continue, even when I think I can’t possibly do anything more.

What are your favorite/least favorite movements to do in a workout?

I love doing most anything with weights. Push press, cleans and deadlifts are my faves. I really hate burpees, box jump overs, and of course, running up the “hill.”

Tammy and Lisa joined The Rock at different times, but quickly connected  and have been a duo as strong as peanut butter and jelly ever since. These ladies are staples in the 6:30am class and known to set up shop in the very back corner…even if it’s a quiet class.

These ladies always make their hour at The Rock fun and filled with laughter. They continually push each other and are always striving to make themselves better. These ladies work hard side by side and don’t give themselves near as much credit for their strength and stamina as they should. They might not see it in themselves, but WE do.

Lisa and Tammy also have a kindness in them that shines both in and out of the gym and extends into everything they do in their lives.

We are blessed to have this duo as part of our team! Stay sassy and sweet ladies!

Senior Class 2021

As another school year comes to an end, we had to say goodbye to another great group of students. Some of them had been with us so long, they felt more like family than students. While this is always a sad time of year for us, we are excited to see the places they will go.

How long have you been a member at Rocktown/what year of college did you join?

Fall of my Junior year - Fall 2019

Plans after Graduation?

Getting my MSA in Accounting at JMU

How do you think being a member at Rocktown helped you while in school?

Rocktown gave me an outlet outside of JMU and kept me grounded through the last couple years of undergrad. I think it can be really easy to get caught up in schoolwork and the college social scene, and I think Rocktown gave me an outlet to get away from that, mentally and physically.

What you'll miss most about the Rock?

The people! The community at Rocktown is really special, and it's obvious how much everyone cares about and supports each other.

I joined freshman year - Fall 2017

Plans after Graduation?

I just accepted an offer at Massachusetts Eye and Ear as a Clinical Research Coordinator as I work on submitting my medical school applications!

How do you think being a member at Rocktown helped you while in school?

Being a member at Rocktown has been such a great experience while at JMU. The community is so supportive, loving, and kind- it really felt like home. The Rock taught me how to push myself mentally and physically in a way that I have never done before.

What you'll miss most about the Rock?

100% all of you people. I love you all so much and am so thankful for the time, love, and hard work we have shared together.

I joined in September of my senior year and went until I graduated.

Plans after graduation?

I will be at Ft. Benning, Georgia doing Infantry Basic Officer Training

How do you think being a member at Rocktown helped you while in school?

I think it helped me a lot, giving me an awesome break from papers and studying. It also helped me stay discipline and on a healthy schedule.

What you'll miss most about the Rock?

I will miss the environment of the Rock the most. Everyone in there seems to enjoy pushing themselves and rising to the challenges of the workout. Everyone suffers in their own way but everyone is getting better.

How long have you been a member at Rocktown/what year of college did you join?

I’ve been a member since the beginning of my sophomore year of college in 2018. So I think that puts me at 2.5 years-ish.

Plans after graduation?

Enlisting in the Air Force.

How do you think being a member at Rocktown helped you while in school?

The Rock has provided me with a true home away from home. Growing up CrossFit has been a part of my life since I was 12 years old, and inside a CrossFit gym is where I feel most comfortable. Being able to have an escape that separates myself from the craziness of JMU, and almost transports me back home, has done wonders for my overall wellness. It is truly amazing how a pretty cruddy day could be completely turned around after working out at the Rock. I can’t help but smile and be thankful.

What you'll miss most about the Rock?

The community! From day one I remember being super impressed with how tight the Rock community is. It has truly been a pleasure to have been able to be a part of it.

How long have you been a member at Rocktown/what year of college did you join?

I’ve been a member at Rocktown since about my sophomore year in high school but I have been the most consistent in the past 2 years.

Plans after graduation?

I will be an Elementary school teacher starting at the beginning of the school year in August.

How do you think being a member at Rocktown helped you while in school?

Being a member at the gym during college has given me something to look forward to at the end of a long day of classes.

What you'll miss most about the Rock?

I have appreciated all the support from everyone in the gym and I’m so happy that I’ll be staying in the area.

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

Originally from New Hampshire. Now I live in McGahyesville with my husband, two dogs and assorted wildlife.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’m just me. I work for Riddleberger Brothers in the Accounting Dept. I love to cook.  While attending JMU, I met a local boy, fell in love and stayed local.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

I was looking for something “more.” I regularly went to the gym and worked out with a great group of people but after a few years, I just wanted “something more.”

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

That very first workout!!  Of course, it was the 12 days of Christmas, in July.  I thought to myself afterward, “HUH! That was so hard, but doable” Then the next day RJ says “And you came back!” I was freaking hooked.

What are your goals for CrossFit?

My one big goal is to do a strict pull-up by the time I’m 60. Other than that, my goals are to eek out small victories one at a time. Heavier Squat there, better form here, faster row another day, small but measurable victories, one at a time.

Why do you do CrossFit?

There are so many reasons, but the main one is I don’t want to be that person at age 70 that can’t enjoy life because of the poor choices I make now. So, here I am, drinking the CrossFit elixir of a long life.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

The People, from Lauren and Nate, who have created something unique and special to all the coaches-that you can tell they really care, down to the fact that if I reached out to any member for help, not one person would hesitate to help. Because THAT is the community of Rocktown CrossFit!

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout?

All of them! But my most favorite is (don’t groan) Devils Press and Deadlifts. Not sure why?? And toes to bar although, these are still a work in progress. It’s like flying through the air, so FUN!!

What are your least favorite? Why?

Running and jumping over low things. Why? Running well, its running after-all, EW! Jumping over things, I’m a klutz, and I prefer not fall on my face too often.

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

I had Lauren as a personal trainer many years ago. I saw her in Gold’s (now Valley Fitness) doing some of the CrossFit moves one day and I wanted to do that!! But I was so intimidated. It took me about a year to walk in and just ask about CrossFit. All those mind games held me back, am I too old, am I fit enough, am I strong enough? If you just give it a chance, you won’t regret it!!

If you’re ever looking for Rhonda…most mornings you can find her backed into her spot no later than 5am.  From there it’s a brisk walk/jog prior to jumping into the 0530 class. I don’t think I can recall a day that she did not have a smile on her face, and pep in her step. Phrases like “that was fun” and “I’m excited for this workout” are a regular occurrence. Rhonda also takes care of us when we least expect it, stocking us up on bathroom spray to keep the mornings fresh and clean! She is truly the spirit of The Rock every morning and the positivity is contagious. Leadership is not by position, it’s what you make of it and I appreciate every day that Rhonda chooses to have a positive mindset with the understanding that she “GETS” to workout vs “has to” workout.

Rhonda, thanks for being the light when most of the world is still asleep. Thanks for your good vibes, and for your uplifting spirit…it does not go unnoticed!

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

Originally from Chesterfield, south side of Richmond. JMU alum 2009 and official townie after RJ finished grad school and got a job with JMU. We now live in Dayton.

0535.jpg

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a registered nurse and currently work at RMH in the Emergency Department. Wife to that short short loving, bandana wearing, “GO TEAM” shouting RJ. Mom to three kiddos, Henry (7), Maggie (4), and Elliott (1).

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

I had been doing Body Pump and weightlifting for years with Jenny Deivers at Valley. Then she went to grad school and our schedules never lined up. I found myself working out alone and aimlessly wandering around Valley Fitness with no plan or push to get through a workout. I would see the CrossFit moms dropping their kids at the Kidzone and was in awe and intimidated. Before my regular 9am Body Pump class one morning, I confessed to Jasmine I was thinking about checking out the Rock. She convinced me to skip Body Pump and crash the 9am with her that very morning. I made several excuses as to why I couldn’t go that day but she wasn’t having it. I went and was hooked.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

Two immediately come to mind. If you’ve ever been to 9am you have probably heard me whine about handstand pushups. It’s a real love/hate relationship. But I worked on them for a long time and the first time I was able to RX Diane I remember feeling AWESOME. I think I had to do 9 single handstand pushups at the end, but it got done. The other was Open workout 19.5. Chest to Bar Pullups and thrusters. Part of my soul is still at the old Rock location after that one.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

The best thing about CrossFit is there’s always something to improve on. I could write a novel about different goals I have for my fitness, but mostly to continue to stay active and be a healthy role model for my kids. And maybe one strict handstand pushup.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

The gym Nate and Lauren have created is something truly awesome. This place has become a haven for so many of us. Working nights, three kids, COVID! Life can be stressful, but after an hour at this place my stress level falls, my body feels better, my mind feels more clear and I haven’t found many things that create that same energy.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

Favorites include anything barbell (minus thrusters), rowing, and handstand pushups when they go well. Least favorite include running, chest to bar pullups, and handstand pushups when they don’t go well. Again, its a love/hate thing with handstand pushups.

If you’re thinking about trying CrossFit, go for it. But come here. It’s amazing. I forget how good we have it, but then RJ and I will drop in somewhere when we’re out of town and then I’m quickly reminded. Our programming is da bomb, the coaches are knowledgeable and approachable and ready to help whenever, and the nutrition coaching is the cherry on the sundae, for lack of a better analogy. Rocktown has given me so much I never imagined a gym could do but for me the most incredible thing has been the self esteem and body positivity it has given me. Being surrounded by strong women and a community that continuously SUPPORTS one another, has given me the ability to appreciate my body for what it can do and not what it looks like. My goals aren’t centered around what size my jeans are or what number is on the scale this week, but instead getting a faster mile time or getting 50 double unders unbroken. Looking good in a bathing suit feels great, don’t get me wrong, but have you ever PR’d in the Open? Now that’s what I’m talking about.

If you workout at 9am, you have worked out with Kim. She’s probably laughing, cracking jokes, or dancing in the corner to the latest Lizzo song. While she’s all fun on the outside, she’s all work on the inside. Kim is consistent whether it’s in the gym or at home, is hardworking, and is constantly pushing herself to be 1% better than yesterday. She has put in all the postpartum work to rebuild her gymnastics skills, her lifts, and alllll the cardio (if you have had a baby while doing CrossFit, you know that the postpartum comeback is 10x harder than working out while pregnant).

But what’s even more impressive than her gym feats is what she does outside of the gym. She’s one of our frontline heros working as a night nurse in the ER…and that alone deserves all the accolades for the past year. But I want to take it a step further. Kim works nights in the ER, has 3 kids, and probably gets limited sleep compared to the average person. Would you know it? Absolutely not. Because I’ve literally NEVER heard Kim complain about being tired. Instead, she’s thankful for an hour at the gym with her homies and getting to sing those Lizzo lyrics mid pullup reps.

So Kim, thank you for all your hard work as a nurse and thank you for keeping my butt in check every time I want to complain that I’m tired. You’re the real MVP sista!

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

We moved from Bath County to Harrisonburg when I was 6. I’ve been in or around Harrisonburg ever since.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’ve been married to my husband Joe for 19 years, we have two kids, Zoe who is 14 and Keagan who is 5.

I have a degree in Equine Science and Riding from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. I’ve competed in Hunter/jumpers, dressage, and completed a 50 mile endurance ride. Eventually I became a professional fox hunter/whipper/huntsmen/kennel man, maintaining a kennel of 40 hounds.

For the past 18 years I’ve worked for the Town of Bridgewater. The first four years in landscaping and currently as a Class 1 Waterworks Operator, producing safe and clean drinking water for the town. And no, I am not a turd herder working wastewater!

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

I secretly stalked CrossFit for about a year before I started. Watching anything I could find on YouTube about it, wishing I was brave enough and fit enough to try it. Then Keagan came along and he is all energy all the time. I figured I’d try it, so maybe I could keep up with him!

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

Everyone was talking about the Open and how everyone should experience it at least once. So I did the 2018 Open and got my first pull-up! Another Open I was able to bust out 50 Double Unders! The feeling of the Open is truly magical! It can also be very defeating and humbling- so many no reps!!

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

My goals are always changing, but I’d say I just want to see what my body is capable of. How much I can ask of it, and how long it will continue to deliver. It seems as though the more you ask and receive, the more you want.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

Oh boy- there isn’t enough space or words to describe why I think Rocktown is beyond special. This community of people is truly amazing. Lauren, Nate, and all the coaches have cultivated a place of growth, respite, tears, laughs, smiles, and life long friendships.

From quarantine, with a borrowed barbell in my garage to now, The Rock has been my saving grace in so many ways.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

My favorite movements are snatches, heavy back squats, squat cleans, wall balls and rowing. I definitely have a love hate relationship with thrusters, burpees and running.

If 2020 had a theme song it’d be “Ironic” by Alanis Morissette. I have never felt stronger or healthier then I currently feel. I’ve been putting in the time at the gym and working on my nutrition with Katie.

Ironically, the day I received the email about being Athlete of the Month, is the day I had three biopsies done. Only to find out I have Stage 1 breast cancer, in both breasts.

While we all are doing the right things and look good on the outside, you have no idea what’s happening on the inside. So please, get all the checks. Mammograms, physicals, bend over and cough, whatever it is, DO IT!

I’m currently waiting on the results of a few more tests before deciding my course of action. Lumpectomy with radiation or a double mastectomy. Whichever one it is, it’s just a pothole in the road. I’ll still be in the back doing a million squats, until I’m healed and able to throw some weight around with all of you again.

I remember the first day Anna walked into The Rock. She was shy, nervous and wanted to meet new friends. She was quickly adopted and taken in by the 9am "mom squad" as they all learned they had children the same age and similar interests.

Fast forward a few years. She's class hopping all over the place and bringing her laugh and contagious smile with her. Over the past few years, it's been awesome to watch Anna transform from the shy and timid athlete to the one that secretly loves LB to gently nudge her to increase the weight on her barbell. She's loves lifting and watching her confidence increase as she's built this strength has been empowering as a coach.

As 2020 threw her (and everyone) curveballs, Anna remained consistent. It didn't matter if she was at home, at work, or could make it to the gym-she stayed CONSISTENT with her workouts...even when her life turned into one big curveball. Anna, your dedication to your health and fitness doesn't go unnoticed by your coaches. You're an inspiration to all, one heck of a hard worker, and will let NOTHING stand in your way.

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

I grew up in the big town of Elkton, I currently live in Penn Laird.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a local, born and raised. I love it here in the Shenandoah Valley. I have been married to my wife Becca for 13-1/2 years. We have 3 wild, crazy and wonderful children. Hudson (11), Eli (9) and Ivy-Paige (5). I am a Pastor on staff at our church, Grace Covenant. I also work part time for my wife’s family business, Isle Candle Co. Between jobs, kids activities and The Rock, I stay pretty busy!

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

My CrossFit moment came in the 2017 Open Workout 17.2. During this workout, I got my first ever Bar Muscle Up. It was a moment that I will never forget. I was so lost in the moment, I forgot that I was in the middle of a workout and just stayed up on the bar, IN SHOCK for several seconds. Then my judge reminded me to continue the workout.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

My CrossFit goals are a 200 lb. Snatch and a 300 lb Clean. I continue to do CrossFit because it is a sport that pushes me mentally, physically and it also provides a competitive push for me. Just when you think you’ve “arrived” CrossFit snaps you back into reality. There will ALWAYS be something to improve.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

I love the camaraderie at The Rock. It doesn’t matter what level of the fitness journey that you are on. All of the athletes will be rooting for you. Just when you think you need to put the barbell down, someone will encourage you to keep it in your hands. The workouts that Nate program are just enough to get you close to the edge and ALL of the coaches know just how far to push you!

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

I love Oly movements or anything that puts the barbell in my hand (except thrusters 🤣). The sound of clanging and banging is music to my ears.

My least favorite movement is obviously thrusters. I am also not a huge fan of long runs. Like anything over 100m!

If you are thinking about a journey to health, don’t mark CrossFit off of the list. The preconceived notion is that you have to be “fit” to join a CrossFit gym. This is NOT true by any stretch of the imagination. We are a community of people, all on our own fitness journey, all at different levels.

Thank you Lauren and Nate for providing a space for athletes of all levels to make, chase and achieve their goals! #likearock

JJ Slye is always on team “good vibes” when he steps through the door. With his vintage back pack that probably has enough supplies to last him a few weeks he’ll stroll to an X with a smile on his face ready to work. All jokes aside JJ has done nothing but put in work. Just about every afternoon during the quarantine him and Becca would make it happen be it in the kitchen or in the yard, they made time for their fitness. JJ also does a great job of recognizing his comfort zone and always makes the effort to step out of it whenever possible. It may be heavy some days but if he can go for it he will make that jump. If you’ve been lucky enough to join a class with both JJ and Becca in attendance its always fun to hear the banter back and forth before the workout starts…especially if they are partners. JJ, thanks for making the rock a better place…your presence is always positive and we appreciate you and your family sweating with us!

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

I live just outside of the city in the Massanetta Springs area.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am married to Damon, to my high school sweetheart, and we have three kids- Cameron, Aubrey and Cora who are 15, 13, and 6. I work full time for Sentara Medical Group as a Practice Management Coordinator. I am finishing my Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Admin at Liberty University. I love to be outside (hiking, camping, at the park, or just on my back deck). I love football (Geaux Saints!), especially college football (Go Irish!).

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

My friend had been doing CrossFit for a few years and she participated in a competition while we were visiting her in Georgia. We went to cheer her on and I just knew in that moment that I wanted to try CrossFit. I knew Nate, Lauren, Jett, and Collins through daycare and so I signed up at Rocktown shortly after we got back from Georgia.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

I feel like I have these moments A LOT. Anytime I exceed my own expectations (which happens so often, thank you coaches for all those ‘little’ pushes to add weight, or row harder, or run a little faster); or you complete a workout that looked hard on the board and felt impossible to finish but you push through to the end and even though you’re laying on the floor you feel amazing for crossing the finish line.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

I think my goals for CrossFit are to just keep pushing, I have amazed myself so far with just how strong I am and how much my body can change.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

Rocktown CrossFit has literally changed my life. I love all the people, I love the coaches, I love those bright green walls. When I walk in, I just know there are no excuses, and the only thing accepted is your best effort. It’s my favorite hour of the day, where nothing else matters but the workout and everyone is cheering for each other.

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite? Why?

Oh goodness, I know that whatever I say I don’t love Nate will put them all in one workout :) Some of my favorites are cleans  and snatches (I love the barbell, and I love when we work up to a one rep max), some of my least favorite movements are burpees, kettlebell swings, and thrusters.

I would just like to thank Nate and Lauren for all the hard work they put into The Rock to make it so amazing. I really can’t imagine my life without this gym and that is coming from someone who has tried and didn’t like just about every other gym and workout in Harrisonburg. I am sorry I didn’t start CrossFit sooner. I wish I could have known what CrossFit is really all about and that you don’t have to be an athlete, or super fit to join CrossFit. I am so thankful for The Rock and all it has done and is still doing for me.

If you have been to a 0530 class and had a hard time hearing the coach due to somebody talking...chances are Lyndsay was the culprit. All jokes aside our paths first crossed with Lyndsay outside of The Rock almost 5 years ago as we shared the same baby sitter. She was a sweet soul who always shared love for Jett and we are so thankful she’s found a home here with us. With every milestone you can see her wanting it a little more and putting in the work to get each one along the way.

IMG_6701.jpg

Lyndsay has melted away pounds but what has been so inspiring is along the way her focus has been solely to be a better athlete...working her technique, getting a little stronger, and adding some running to her regiment all have resulted in her transformation. Lyndsey the sky is the limit and we are so glad you found your inner athlete. Keep grinding, Nate will keep shooshing, but there’s no denying every 0530 is a little better with some Lyndsay Keck.

When we reflect on Townley’s journey at The Rock several words come to mind but “Resilient” seems to be the one that continues to come up. I can personally say we challenge Townley daily…whether it’s a goal in a workout, to join for a run, to eat more vegetables, to read more books, etc. It never stops…but she always seems to rise to the challenge. I’d say Lauren and I probably throw more at her than most her age but we know what she is capable of and she has not disappointed. I can remember Townley coming in with Zap those first few weeks and learning the difference between being uncomfortable and “I can’t do it.” I hope that I can speak for her when I say her fitness and lifestyle will never be the same. Not only has weight melted away but she is legit strong and will row you under the table. While she may be a bit boujee, she understands what it takes to work hard. And whatever she is asked-she never says No. Stay resilient Townley…do the toes to bar, run the hill with the stroller and keep working…its paying off.

Where are you from or where do you live around here?

I am from Richmond, VA and now reside in “the cave” aka Nate and Lauren’s basement.

Tell us a little about yourself

I graduated from JMU in 2019 with a degree in Health Sciences. In the last year, I have been a nanny for the Black’s and worked as a patient care tech at RMH. I just started nursing school at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing that is based in Richmond.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit?

My roommate, Nicole/”Zap”, was doing the open and I came to watch her. All she ever talked about was Crossfit and I thought she was crazy, but after seeing how badass she was during the open I finally gave in.

When or what was your "CrossFit Moment" - the moment that you really felt pushed or felt like you really accomplished something?

Oh man there are SO many times that I’ve felt pushed, isn’t that the beauty of CrossFit? #humblepie A workout that comes to mind was a Chad workout that had 20-1 Air Squats and 1-20 Burpees to a target. It involved some tears and a lot of death glares to LB.

What are your goals for CrossFit? Why do you do CrossFit?

I do CrossFit because it keeps me healthy and challenged. I like to tell myself I am not competitive, but this really fills that gap in my heart from playing volleyball in high school.

What do you think is special about Rocktown CrossFit?

In my previous spotlight post as a JMU grad, I wrote about how much the people mean to me and this still holds true. The main reason I stuck around in the ‘burg is because of the Rock and the friends it has brought into my life. Another thing that I would like to add is the programming and hard work that is put into running this gym. Since I live with Nate and Lauren, I get to see a lot of behind the scenes work they do to make everything run smoothly and they do a dang good job!

What are your favorite movements to do in a workout? What are your least favorite?

Favorite: Rowing, Snatches, and really any heavy barbell
Least Favorite: Running and anything on the Rig

Free write - whatever you feel like you want to share.

Since I can do nursing school remotely, I will be sticking around in Harrisonburg longer than expected! I just can’t stay away!

Not many 0530 classes pass without a Brenda Forren sighting. Whether she’s blazing through a mile run after class or holding court with Cville Sara it’s impossible to miss her work ethic. For the past 3+ years we have been blessed by her presence and we are forever grateful we get to see her on a daily basis. Lauren has known Brenda from her very first workout at Golds Gym…she doesn’t remember exactly how long ago but she estimates it’s been close to 15 years. That’s what is so special about these relationships we build...you never know where they will lead and 15 years later it’s safe to say Brenda’s fitness has grown to new heights.

Name: Brenda Forren

Age: 46

Where are you from/Where do you live around here? Elkton

Tell us about yourself! I graduated from East Preaston in Terra Alta WVa. Got a degree in Cosmetology from Clarksburg. I am a small business owner of InStyle Family Hair Salon in Harrisonburg. I have an awesome husband who supports all my gym activities. He gets our daughter Alyssa, who is 14 now, to school in the mornings so I can get some gym time.

How long have you been coming to Rocktown CrossFit? I have been coming to CrossFit for 2 1/2 years.

What got you started at Rocktown CrossFit? I was a member of Valley Fitness 13 years prior to CrossFit and wanted to take it up a notch. Saw how CrossFit had changed other people's body structure and I wanted to build more muscle.

When or what was your CrossFit moment? Me as Sara side by side. It was like a 100 burpees to a target. I forget the rest of the workout. I definitely cheated but not because I wanted too. I could NOT move any more.

What are your goals for CrossFit? What are the reasons you do CrossFit? Always push myself right above being comfortable, build muscle and tone. Working out helps to reset me everyday to a healthy lifestyle.

In your own words, what is special about Rocktown CrossFit? I love the way we cheer each other on. No matter your level you belong to a group of awesome athletes. Shout out to Sara for always cheering me on. But most important I think Lauren and Nate make Rocktown special because they have a gift from God. Thanks for your passion and encouragement everyday.

Favorite Movements to do in a workout? I like to run because some people think I'm fast.

Thank you Brenda for making The Rock your home. Thank you for being a great example to all women out there that even with a family putting your health first is important.  Lastly thank you for your positive outlook and great energy you bring every morning, it does not go overlooked and we are grateful for it.

The 2019 Graduates

Each one of you hold a special place in our hearts. I believe you've all been with us at least 3 years and we couldn't be more proud of how much you each have grown. So many great memories and milestones...from Kevin almost killing Neil followed by Nate almost killing Kevin to Zap bouncing back from a torn MCL it's been a ride. There hasn't been a visit from the Leeper family where the whole gang didn't drop in for a sweat, and Lauren and Zap pushed Townley to tears to finish a workout just a few weeks ago. I can remember Kaiden dropping in during his visit to Bridgewater his senior year of high school and has been the fittest in the gym in regards to the CrossFit Open...we'll miss him coming to the late class on hard workout days so he knew what he had to do in order to achieve the best score for the day.

Check below for some words from them and make sure to tell them congratulations on their huge accomplishment.

Plans after graduation:

After graduation the plan is to move back home to New Jersey, save a little money and begin my teaching career as an elementary school teacher!

What you’ll miss most about the Rock:

I am going to miss the community feel the Rock has created. Every time I walk in the door everyone is so friendly and encouraging. I’m going to miss being a member at the Rock and all the people that I work out with...special shout out to the 5:30 AM crew and a to RJ for being such a great hype man that early in the morning!

I want to thank Lauren and Nate and the rest of the Rock coaches for being so welcoming, encouraging and helpful. I also want to thank them for creating a box that pushes one another and encourages each other day in and day out, especially when Lauren tells me I need to add more to my bar lol. When I first came to the Rock my sophomore year, I lacked some confidence but over the past 3 years the Rock and the members have pushed me to be a better and stronger version of myself. Thanks for all the memories and the GAINZZZ!

How long have you been at Rocktown: All 4 years at Bridgewater College.

Plans after graduation: I am going to go back home and find a job teaching PE at a high school.

What you'll miss the most about the Rock: The friends I have made during my time at the Rock.

I have been at the Rock for four years and over those years I have grown up a lot. I feel like I am a better person today at the end of my college career than I was coming into college. The Rock has played a big part in helping me to grow from a young kid to a soon to be teacher.

CrossFit workouts are really challenging for anybody. It is hard work. However when you’re doing those workouts in a positive atmosphere with friends around you, it turns into one of the best hours of the day.  That’s what makes Rocktown so much more that just another gym. It is a family that cares about each other and because of that it makes doing those tough workouts fun!

Hometown: Fairfax City, Virginia

Major: Political Science Major, Military Leadership Minor

How long at Rocktown: November of 2016 - 2 years and 5 months

Plans after graduation:

I commission as an officer in the United States Army on May 4th in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. I assessed into the Engineer Corps and will start my Engineer Basic Officer Leadership Course on May 20th, 2019 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. There, I will learn combat engineer roles (IED demolition, route clearance, urban breaching, obstacle breaching), and construction roles (mobile bridging and vertical/horizontal forward operating base roles). From there, I will have the opportunity to attend Sapper School, a 28 day school that teaches and assesses your ability to support the infantry in a combat engineer role. After my Officer basic course, I will be going down to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. I will work as either a combat engineer, a vertical engineer, or a horizontal engineer in the 1st Armored Division, 1st Brigade Combat Team (Stryker), 16th Brigade Engineer Battalion. I will be stationed at Fort Bliss for about 3 to 4 years.

What you'll miss the most about the Rock: I will miss everything about The Rock, the coaches, family, and community. I will miss showing up to the best hour of the day and showing up after  along school day or PT session and being able to blow off some steam and better myself. I will also miss The Open at The Rock and the support system that shows up to every workout.

Showing up to The Rock has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I showed up for my first session and never looked back (I drank the Kool-Aid hard and still do). The Rock and CrossFit have become a passion of mine and I don't know if I will ever belong to a gym that can compare to The Rock. Lauren has been a role model for me and has guided me to being a better and more fit person pushing me in the gym and never letting me take my foot off of the gas. Showing up to the gym everyday has been the best hour of my day. If I have a tough day, I know showing up to The Rock, getting in a good workout, and being with all the positive people that The Rock fosters, will always turn my day around.

Some highlights that I will never forget.... almost taking out Neal with a 135lb snatch that I could not get in the 2017 Open and getting lit up by Nate  (I just did a workout with 145lb snatches in it!). Hitting a 220lb clean PR during the 2018 Open at the last second with everyone in the gym cheering me on. The ROTC workout that was hosted at The Rock by Nate. Seeing coaches at Corgans and Rocktown beer fest after a few too many and yelling, "Those are my coaches!". And Lauren always in my ear (sometimes yelling like a drill sergeant), making sure I get that extra rep, round, or calorie in. The Rock is one of the few things that have made JMU what it is for me and I cannot thank Nate and Lauren enough for welcoming me into their home to make me a better and more fit person. Thank you to everyone for making my time here at JMU (the 630am class, the mom class at 9am, the noon class, and the 4:30 and 5:30pm class). Thank you, I don't know if I will ever belong to a CrossFit community like this one again.

Hometown: Fairfield, New Jersey

Major: Psychology, B.S. and Statistics Minor

How long at Rocktown: Started August 2016, So about 2 years and 9 months, just shy of 3.

 Plans after graduation:

After graduation I am going to graduate school. I will either enroll into one of the master’s programs I got into or into the Ph.D. program I got into. I will most likely end up at the Ph.D. program I think, which is in New York. Although I have not officially decided yet. The field is quantitative methods in educational and psychological research.

What you’ll miss the most about the Rock:

I will mostly miss the atmosphere that the coaches and the members create at the Rock. It is very welcoming, friendly, and supportive. The Rock creates an intrinsically motivating environment that makes working out fun every day, even if its death by burpees/thrusters/devils presses, lol.

I will miss all of the people who I work out with every day and I will miss being a part of a community. Every day I look forward to going to the Rock and getting a great workout in with great people. Overall, Rocktown provided a space for me throughout my undergrad career to handle the stress of school through working out. So I will miss the positive space and atmosphere it provided.

I want to thank The Rock for being an outlet for me during my sophomore, junior, and senior years of college. When I look back on my college years, The Rock is going to pop into my head as one of the most memorable things from this time in my life.

Some highlights of my time at the gym:

  • My first workout after PEAK was on a hot August day, at noon, and consisted of wall balls, burpees, and running. Definitely thought I was going to die.

  • I remember the first time I suffered through thrusters. The workout was Fran.

  • The 6:30 A.M. class, which was my consistent time for a while (I miss that class).

  • The open each year, watching people PR, and surprising myself in workouts

  • The people!!! & all the new people I’ve met through The Rock

  • Learning macros: Lauren did a really great job at helping me learn how to eat properly and eat more. Freshman year is rough because your diet consists of alcohol, fries from the dining hall, and dominos. My weight was constantly fluctuating because there was no balance to my eating. So, upon my sophomore year of college (when I first started CrossFit) I didn’t know how to properly balance my eating. Macros really came in handy in order to understand how to fuel my body to be able to handle the intense workouts at the Rock. I can literally now look at a plate of food and estimate the nutritional information in my head, (I don’t know if that is a blessing or a curse, hahaha). Thanks Lauren!

  • Finally getting double unders

  • I like how I get to compete with myself every day. I did sports year-round in high school, so coming to college and not having that made it feel like there was a void in my daily schedule. The Rock definitely filled that void.

  • And my last but not least highlight is convincing Townley (my roommate) to join the Rock. It helped us both become more motivated and dedicated students, and helped us learn how to prioritize our schedules and manage our time wisely.

Major: Health Sciences

How long at Rocktown: 2 years

Plans after graduation: I plan to go to nursing school, but I am taking a year off to work.

What I'll miss most about the Rock:

If Lauren can't talk me into staying in Harrisonburg, I will miss the people the most! I think if you ask anyone what their favorite thing is about the Rock, they will say the people and that truly says so much about this gym. College has been such a rollercoaster for me, but all of y'all have been a consistent source of love, encouragement, and support (I seriously cannot thank you all enough--not gonna lie I started to tear up writing this). There are so many people at this gym that I look up to because they are great mothers/fathers, phenomenal athletes, or they are just really awesome humans that I am so lucky to get to spend time with nearly every day.

First off I have to say shoutout to Zap/Nicole! She has been my roommate for the past 3 years and she first introduced me to CrossFit. I came to watch her in several Open workouts in 2017. I was in complete awe!! I had always played sports/danced my entire life and there was definitely a void when I came to college. After much coaxing from Zap, I came in to try my first workout, which ended in me throwing up my breakfast. Zap remembers my first workout but all I remember is throwing up, but that didn't stop me from coming back! When I first showed up to the Rock, I was nearing academic probation and was really struggling academically. You would think when you join a gym your results would be mostly physical, but for me, the biggest improvement has been mentally and emotionally. This gym has both matured me and taught me discipline in all respects of life. I can happily say ever since I have been a member at the Rock, I have been on either Dean's or President's list every semester! Honestly the Rock has really changed my life for the better. I am so appreciative of what the Rock, the members, and coaches have done for me and this will always be a second home to me! <3

March 2018 - The Snake - Kaiden

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Kaiden I am 22 years old. I am currently a junior at Bridgewater studying to be a physical education teacher. I got into the physical education field because I enjoy helping people better themselves. Also my dad and grandfather were both physical education teachers so I have grown up around a healthy and physical lifestyle. I am the oldest child in my family with two younger brothers (Cole 19, Blake 18) and a sister (Lexi 17). My siblings still live back at home in Stafford, VA.  When I go back home for breaks I will often work as a substitute teacher or for a construction business.

How long have you been at The Rock and what got you started?

I have been at the Rock since my freshman year at Bridgewater, which makes it roughly 3 three years. I remember coming to visit Bridgewater, as a senior in high school, and I searched for a CrossFit gym in the area.  I remember walking through the door of the Rock and seeing everyone working hard with the music blaring. I was looking for someone in charge and that’s when I met Dana.  She was very helpful, and that turned into my first workout at the Rock.

When/what was your “CrossFit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

Ummm… The CrossFit moment where I might actually pass out was during the Open last year on the first workout. On the first go around for 17.1 I did it Friday night at Staunton and it hurt like crazy and I didn’t do as well as I thought I could.  The following Monday I decided to come in for the 6:30 p.m. to just do the regular class workout, but Dana persuaded me to do the workout again. On this go round I told myself I would not drop the dumbbell until the final round of fifty snatches. I managed to do so, but when I got to the final round I was in a very bad place and wanted nothing more than to stop and pass out right there. But thanks to Hunter and Brittney cheering me on I finished with a better score. To this day I have had many difficult workouts, but never to that degree.

Favorite workout?/Least favorite workout?

My favorite workouts are long workouts with complex movements. I enjoy keeping a steady pace and doing things  such as muscleups, cleans, and most gymnastics (except chest to bar). My least favorite workouts are sprints. I do not enjoy the feeling of being perfectly fine to lying on the ground gasping for air in a span of 2 to 3 minutes. Not my favorite.

You can go to any concert of any artist (dead or alive) which one would you go to?

I went to a Dierks Bentley concert a year ago and had a blast. I would love to do that again!

What are your CrossFit goals?

Whenever I go in for a class I will eventually go to the board and look at the top scores for the day. My goal every day is to leave with the top score. I usually do pretty well, with the exception of when Luke comes back from college. It also helps that in the past I usually have gone to the 6:30 class so I get to see all of the scores for the day. Lately however I have been going to the 5:30 class a lot more for some reason (insert emoji face below).  Another goal of mine is to always be improving. One way I measure my improvement is with the Open. Every year I try to finish a little better than the previous years and so far I’ve manage to do so, but It gets more challenging each year.

What’s your favorite cheat food?

Probably bacon, if that’s a cheat food. I am generally a pretty healthy eater. Going into my 7th grade year of school I was trying to get ready for football and so I decided to stop eating junk food. That meant no more soda, chips, candy, desserts, ect. I managed to keep this up through that football season and have kept that mentality ever since.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

It’s a big family that loves to workout. Everyone there is very nice and welcoming, It’s usually the best hour of my day. Back home I go to a Sport and Health gym, a very traditional type gym. In there, I could go the whole time without talking to anyone. The Rock is nothing like that. Everyone is very social and care about how your day is going. Over the years I’ve gotten to know a lot of people and have made some really great friends. Another part I like is the accountability, no one would care at the Sport and Health if I skip a day, but my friends at the Rock will hold me accountable and I’m glad they do. In the past there have been times where I have not been having all that great of a day, but every time I leave the Rock I leave feeling better.

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

The Rock has been great to me. I am not only in better shape from my time at the Rock, but I also think that it has made me a better person as well. That positive vibe from the coaches and the members rubs off on you. I want to thank Lauren and Nate for all the hard work they put into making Rocktown Crossfit what it is. Always trying to make the gym better by doing things like buying new equipment (like the dumbbells that are awesome) and hosting events during the holidays. I also want to thank all the coaches who have all helped me out and encouraged me.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

Kaiden needs no introduction.  He’s been one of the best athlete’s since the day he walked through our doors.  The crowning of athlete of the month wasn’t really a matter of “if” just a matter of “when”.  That being said, with all the gains he continues to make in the gym he is a great young man outside of the gym as well.  When I was 22 the last thing I was doing was driving 15 minutes from my college dorm so I could workout every day…its says a lot about his work ethic and how he was raised.  Kaiden is always polite, always the first to jump in and help and is always encouraging those around him to be better.  Keep killing it Kaiden…we are looking forward to one more year of you whipping up with us…but I promise the old man won’t go down without a fight   Congrats!

February 2018 - The Coyote - Wylie Powers

wylie-aotm-1024x583.png

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

My name is Wylie Powers, born and raised in southwestern VA.  I will be 43 in a couple weeks, and it has been an interesting 43 years.  I joined the US Navy out of high school, where I trained to operate nuclear powered propulsion and power generation plants.  My wife Shelly and I live in Broadway and have been here off and on since 1996. Our 22 year old son completed college, gotten married, and is now embracing his life in sunny southern California as an assistant pastor.   Since 2002, I have worked at ColonialWebb in various roles from field service technician to service manager.  My current role as a refrigeration sales engineer gives me the flexibility to be more serious with my health needs.  Outside of work and Rocktown, I am active in our church and I get to work with the teenagers there.

How long have you been at The Rock and what got you started?

I have been coming to Rocktown off and on for 3.5 years.  Going to the gym just did not excite me, and actually depressed me more due to travel demands.  I heard about this thing called CrossFit and it looked interesting.  After driving into the parking lot several times, I came in and picked up a card from the front desk.  I called Lauren, scheduled an appointment and asked, what do I need to do so I am fit enough to start working out here at Rocktown.  Answer: We will scale the work accordingly, come in and start now.  It took a while, but I have been seriously committed since August 2017.

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I can remember many…

So I am not a runner, though I am working on getting there.  After my first three months, keeping in mind all my workouts had been scaled, the class went for a 1 mile run.  Nate was the coach and he informed me, they are running, “I would like you to row 2000 meters”.  I hadn’t done more than 800 meters before this date.  Well, I did the row, then the rest of the workout.  When I finished, I hit the floor, rolled over and just laid there.  Then for the rest of the day, I was in a fog…lol…and let’s talk about sore…I wasn’t sure I would walk upright again.

 Favorite workout?/Least favorite workout?

I like rowing- What can I say?  Then dead lifts are always fun too.

Jumping rope is my nemesis, actually any jumping.  So, the chipper from 12-4-17 still gives me shivers.

You can go to any concert of any artist (dead or alive) which one would you go to?

The Piano Guys

What are your CrossFit goals?

Life.  That is the easiest way to say it.  Until the end of November, I had not weighed less than 300 lbs. since 1999.   My true goal is health, with a side effect of weight loss.

I adapted a saying about three years ago I found, and unfortunately until this past fall, had not made any head way…”Who wants to be spectator and watch life go by”.  I have spectated for too many years, and excited to live more.

What’s your favorite cheat food?

Cheeseburger, oh, it must have sharp cheddar cheese, dill pickle, tomato, onion, Duke’s mayo and light ketchup.  I think it’s time for a cheat meal.

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

The Rock is a place to go to lay it all down and to take a break from the whirlwind of life.  The day may have been crazy, but I can leave work in the car, burn off some of the frustration in the warm up, give in to the energy and atmosphere of the workout, and when done, it feels like a reset of the day.  Because of the people, the family, that make up the Rock’s community, I am slowly coming out of my shell.  I do not know everyone, but everyone I have met is approachable, friendly, genuine, and real.

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

BACK Story:  April / May of 2017, I spent some time with my primary physician and a nutritionist.  At 348 pounds, they both advised that I no longer do CrossFit at all.  “It is too intense, and my body was not benefitting due to chronic fatigue syndrome.”   I tried their recommendations, their food and workout plans, and ugh is all I can say.  Come August, I said enough was enough. There was not any real progress for months. I reached out to Lauren, she may or may not remember the conversation, but it was a turning point.  The conversation went like this, I am tired of listening to the doctors, I stopped coming to CrossFit because my doctor’s recommendation.  Their eating and exercise regiments are not working.   I will commit, will you help me?  We had had many discussions in the previous three years, and I am sure she thought “here we are again” but she was gracious and didn’t say it.  We talked about where to start and started counting macros.  Easy – no, worth it – yes.  And in September, Shelly even joined me.

Here we are now 70 lbs. less.  The Rock has introduced me to life without spectating.  My energy levels are higher and I can do things I have not been able to do for years.  Lauren and all the coaches have had patience with this grumpy / quiet / sometimes negative person.  If I was not able to make it to the class Lauren was coaching, the coach at the time I was able to attend was aware I was coming and had some options and great input.  Each coach has helped with scaling and it’s awesome to have the equipment for the modifications and creative ways of perform the Workout.  Even with the scaling, I am sure no one else has heard “keep your head up” and “drop lower” for the squats.

The Rocktown family is accepting, helping, encouraging, and real.  Many times I have needed and received encouragement from others in the class.  Donald, Jakob, or Sherry and others are there offering some of the much needed encouragement when I am dragging.  I have another family.  It is the people of Rocktown.  Like it or not, I claiming you.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff

70lbs.  It took 2 things…self discipline and commitment to consistency.  Wylie rarely misses an opportunity to get better, scales when he needs to and give it everything he has for 60 minutes.  But as Wylie and others can tell you, the hour you workout is important but its nothing compared to what you do the other 23 hours of the day.  The foundation is and always will be laid with nutrition.  Once we get that right the rest will take care of itself.  You can look at Wylie and clearly see the changes he’s made but more importantly its seeing how he moves is most impressive.  His speed with a barbell, his ability to move off the floor…its working.  If anyone has ever seen a coyote in the wild, you notice that he’s very quiet, keeps his head down and never stops moving.  This couldn’t be a better description of Wylie…and while he may not say much he couldn’t be a nicer guy and its been great getting to know him and his wife Shelly through The Rock.  Congrats Wylie, keep up the good work!

September 2017 - The Hustler - Rob Lynch

rob-768x1024.jpg

My name is Rob Lynch and I will be 57 in December.  I have a degree in Electrical Engineering from VA Tech (Go Hokies!).  My wife Carmen and I have 2 sons, 3 daughters, one grand daughter and another on the way.  I am the Manager of Design and Construction at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

This is my 3rd year of crossfit.

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

If a crossfit moment is when you think you are going to die, there is not enough room here, that happens every week.  My real crossfit “moment” is at about 6:25 in the morning when everyone is on their hands and knees in a pool of sweat gasping for air. There is no better feeling than knowing that while 99.9% of people are still in bed, you have done what you needed to do to take care of your body.  THAT is a crossfit moment.

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

I’m not sure “favorite” is the right term to use here, but don’t get too worked up about wall balls or cleans.

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

Riding the bull (aka rowing).  It used to be really bad, but I think I am at peace with it now.  Rowing really takes it out of me though, so any workout with rowing involved takes it to another level.

What are your goals?

I have always had to battle being overweight, so I have to work out.  While I enjoy lifting a little more each week and doing things like kipping pull ups that I never thought I could do, the real goal is to just eep coming to the gym and doing the work.

What motivates you to continue coming back?

Since my eighth grade football coach built us a bench out of treated wood and dug up some rusty weights from the varsity fieldhouse, I have always been a gym rat.

I love being in the gym.  Since now I am usually/always the oldest person in the class, I just enjoy being with a bunch of young people who share a passion to stay fit.  That happens because of the atmosphere and attitude that is prevalent at the “ROCK” – get the work done, have a good time, encourage and help each other.

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Chocolate cake with a tall glass of milk!

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

Crossfit is really a different experience for me.  I have mainly worked out with a partner or alone before crossfit, but seldom in a class environment.

There are a few things that make the ROCK special for me:

  • All the coaches do the workouts and suffer with the rest of us.
  • No one is finished until everyone is finished.  You don’t like being the last one to finish, but at least everyone is cheering you on and not putting away weights and walking out the door.
  • Every workout is hard no matter what level you are at.  Everyone is a different size and at a different level of fitness, but with scaling, we are all equals.

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

I really enjoy the Rock!  All the coaches are great and help in different ways.  Having lifted weights all my life, I really like the fine tuning that I get on a daily basis.  It’s very subtle- move your knees back an inch, keep your eyes forward, your butt is coming up before your chest, drop under the weight more.  Then there is the illusive but always appreciated “that looked really good”!  Thank you Lauren, Nate, Rat, Laura Lee, Dana, Wayne, Scrub and all the coaches for everything you do.

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:

It’s very rare that Rob ever misses a “Ride the Bull” day!  It’s been awesome getting to know Rob these past few year.  As most of the morning crew knows Rob makes the commute to The Rock all the way from Greene County…and he’s typically the first one in the parking lot every morning.  I would say on average I open the doors about 15-20 minutes before class time and for Rob he gets straight to work.  A series of warming up and stretching to get the most out of the morning.  It’s very much the same as soon as the workout is done…Rob has his stuff put away and it’s on to some accessory work on the rig, the jump rope or he’s out the door on a run.  Rob is by far the most efficient person to walk through that door day in and day out.  And if you get the chance in between everything he’s doing, pick his brain on some hokie football or just life in general.  Rob is continually lifting up those around him and praising their efforts.  It’s been awesome having you as a staple in class at 5:30am…thank you for making The Rock your home!

July 2017 - Mission Possible - Tara Roe

image1.jpg

Tell us about yourself (name, age, education, family, work, etc.)

Hey y’all!  My name is Tara Roe and I’m 35 years old.  I live in Bridgewater with my husband and our beautiful & sassy 5 year old daughter, Elizabeth.  I work in HR at James Madison University.  I graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and am currently working on my MBA from JMU.  I also coach Special Olympics for Harrisonburg/Rockingham county athletes.

How long have you been doing crossfit?

6 awesome months – since January 2017

When/what was your “crossfit moment” or have you had one? (the one where you think you may actually die)

I think I saw a bright light at the end of the tunnel a few times during Christmas in July….lol!  It was brutal!  There was also a time rowing that I had to jump off the rower and puke – fun times (yes, I still finished the workout!)

What are your favorite crossfit movements?

I complain about them A LOT, but I really like wall balls.  And anything with the bar – there is literally no better sound than the weights slamming to the ground when you need to relieve some stress!!

What movement makes you look at the white board and want to walk back out the door?

RUNNING!!  Ugh! No other move makes me cringe like running– which is why I make myself do it as often as possible!

What are your goals?

I’ve lost 30 pounds since starting at The Rock and although I still have some weight to kick to the curb I am now more focused on the weight on the bar as opposed to the weight on the scale.  Of course I want to be able to do pull-ups, handstand pushups, double unders, etc….and I know I will get there eventually….but right now I appreciate being able to move better and feel stronger.  But most important, I want to set a good example for my daughter and instill healthy behaviors and healthy living in her at a young age.  She’s already doing burpees and wall walks at home with me so she’s off to a great start!

What motivates you to continue coming back?

The people – hands down!  Regardless of what is going on in my life, I know I can come to The Rock and leave feeling amazing (maybe a little like I just died….but still amazing!)  The coaches and other athletes are so positive and encouraging – it’s addicting to be around this group!

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Anything with cheese…..or whiskey

In your own words what is Rocktown Crossfit?

Rocktown Crossfit is a place where you can come in feeling like a lazy heffalump and leave feeling like Wonder Woman!  There is nothing the day can throw at you that some sweat, loud music, heavy weights and lots of screaming won’t fix.  It’s a place that doesn’t require you to think (well, unless we have to do math – but don’t worry, they have calculators!) – you can just come in, be told what to do, when to do it and when to stop….and then lay in a puddle of sweat next to your buddies being proud of how hard you all worked.  It’s one of the best things that has happened to me!  Rocktown Crossfit is a family that I am thankful for each and every day!

Free Write: (anything you want to say about trainers/facilities/other athletes/etc)

I had been asking my co-worker, Stephenie Williams, about CrossFit for a while – then one day I decided I wanted to try it out.  She arranged for a few of us from work to drop in.  I remember walking in and feeling SUPER intimidated….for about 5 seconds.  Then it seemed like everyone was coming up and talking to me, welcoming me and genuinely seemed happy that I was there.  So we went through Peak and I was hooked.  I started with 3 days a week and quickly moved up to 4 or 5 (sometimes 6) times a week.  I felt (and still feel) like I just can’t get enough!  The workouts are hard – no doubt….and they will challenge you physically and mentally – but there is always an awesome & supportive coach right there encouraging you to pick up the bar or jump back on the rig at the moment when you feel like giving up.  Every single coach at The Rock seems to genuinely want to see us succeed and push past any barriers we think we have.

I truly love and appreciate each and every coach….but I really need to give some love to Lauren…..man….where do you start with her?  She is AMAZING!  Her accountability groups have taught me how to eat, how to meal prep, how to get out of my comfort zone, and how to make health and fitness a lifestyle and not just a fad.  She is always there to give a high five or a “hell yeah!” when the number on the scale goes down or when I kick butt in a workout.   One thing is for sure – she will not give up on you and she won’t let you give up on yourself.  The world needs more people like Lauren Black!!

I’m also very thankful for the other athletes and friends I have made at The Rock – y’all are some of the most awesome and badass people I have ever been around – the energy is so positive and contagious.  I love that we all encourage each other through the most difficult workouts and celebrate our successes.  I’m so thankful for Rocktown – my only regret is not having this awesomeness in my life sooner!  Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this family!

A Note from the Rocktown Staff:  32lbs folks…Thirty. Two.  In 6 Months.  Tara is a beacon of hope for the hundreds out there who keep saying, “it’s not for me” or “it will make you bulky”.  Her story and journey are as real as it gets.  I can remember Tara’s first week of doing PEAK, she came to me saying she had goals and was very clear in what she wanted to accomplish and she has made the necessary sacrifices.  Sometimes its eating before you join your coworkers for el charros, sometimes its ordering the fajitas instead of the burrito…but as she has shown every time you make that choice it makes it that much easier the next time you have to make it.  Tara is so humble and one of the sweetest soul’s you’ll encounter.  No matter how long her day or what she has going on no doubt you’ll be greeted with a warm smile.  Her commitment to being the best athlete she can coupled with her dedication to tracking her food is 100% what it takes to make changes…she never asks questions just takes what she’s been giving and delivers time after time.  Thank you for trusting us with your fitness…we can’t way to see where this journey continues to take you and the example you can set for those around you.  It’s plastered all over the campus of JMU where Tara works but it’s clear it’s something she lives by, “be the change you want to see in the world”.  Congrats Tara!
